Benita Nastami has studied gender and feminism since her undergraduate degree at the Department of Criminology, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Indonesia. It was from there that Ninit, as she is usually called, began to develop an interest in gender and feminist issues as well as Penology and Human Rights studies, urging her to write on “The Vulnerability of Women Inmates to HIV Exposure in Lapas Klas IIA Bogor” for her undergraduate thesis.

After graduating from the Department of Criminology in 2011, Ninit joined the Center for Detention Studies (CDS) as a researcher. In CDS, Ninit was involved in their research project with the Directorate General of Correctional on “Quality Survey of Correctional Services”. Her interest in gender and penology was developed through workshops such as the feminist methodology workshop by Women Research Institute and the Information Technology Training by Brush Farm Corrective Service Academy in 2013. In February 2014, Ninit joined Women Research Institute as a Researcher.***
