The notion that sees the majority vote election system may hinder the participation of women in the Election 2009 should be contested. Quantitatively the representation of women in the National Parliament is 18%, the highest percentage in the history of Indonesia. Some WRI’s research areas also showed that women’s representation in the parliament increase at the districts/cities, among others in Pontianak, Solo, Mataram and North Minahasa. 

 

What are the factors using majority vote election system that increase the women’s representation in the 2009 Election? Is there any election system that enables women to increase the political participation of women in the next legislative election?

What is the best alternative election system to increase women’s political representation? All of these questions will be discussed in this Seminar.
