As part of WRI’s reproductive health programme, WRI held a seminar and public seminar under the theme ‘Provide Youths Their Rights for Reproductive Health Information and Services’. This seminar was held on 14 November 2013 in Bumi Asih Jaya Hotel, Bandung. During this occasion, WRI featured experts who uncovered adolescents’ problems regarding sexual and reproductive health and rights, such as the minimum access to and the lack of knowledge/education on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).
This event was attended by 60 participants and 3 speakers, namely Dra. Hj.Linda Herliany (Head of Sub Sector of Youth Resilience, Provincial National Population and Family Planning Board of West Java), Siti Aisyah (Health Office of Bandung), and Novi (Representative of Mitra Citra Remaja/MCR) Provincial PKBI of West Java. The event was opened with WRI’s movie screening on the access to adolescent reproductive health services in Gunung Kidul District, D.I. Yogyakarta.
The characteristics of youths, being very sensitive and fragile towards negative influences, cause many to provide them with ‘wrong’ information and knowledge. Adolescence is a transformation phase from children to adults, making it greatly important to provide adolescents with the right information, particularly regarding reproductive health rights. This seminar revealed several basic risks for adolescent reproductive health, such as drugs, free sex, HIV AIDS, and early marriage.
In regards to these issues, it is highly necessary to educate youths about their sexual and reproductive health and rights, in order for them to avoid problems that may risk their lives. Therefore, participation is needed from many parties such as schools, peer groups, health workers, and the family.
