This fact sheet contains the results of WRI’s findings regarding the issue of women’s political participation in the parliament. The survey explores several questions, such as the importance of women’s participation in politics, women’s political acumen compared to men’s, and the opportunities for women’s political participation in the 2014 political constellation. These facts prove the importance of ratifying the Gender Equality and Equity Bill in the lives of women, particularly in politics and decision-making.

Since the reformation era in Indonesia, women’s political participation, particularly women’s representation in decision-making, has become an important agenda of the government and legislation. Various affirmation policies and strengthening actions have been carried out. In inclusive democracy, the public, as one of the most important pillars of democracy, has an imperative role in realizing a wider and more impactful political participation of women.

Women’s participation in politics in crucial, as their existence can increase the prosperity of women by representing, monitoring, and influencing agendas and policy-making processes, as well as participating in the development. However, in reality women’s political representation in the parliament is still below the target quota of 30%. On the other hand, WRI’s survey results state that the Indonesian public agrees for an equal opportunity for women and men to be involved in politics.

This fact sheet was made to deliver facts, data, and evidences on the importance of providing women with the opportunity to sit in the parliament and implement gender-responsive policies in every sector.
