This policy research is a formulation of the outcomes of WRI’s research, which was conducted for 18 months since August 2012. There is a debate between those who support the ratification of Gender Equality and Equity Bill and those who oppose it. Therefore, it triggered WRI to conduct this research and provide recommendations to synchronize perception of gender equality.

Indonesia has recognized the importance of gender equality since the adoption of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) in 1984. Since then several policies have been made by the Indonesian government, but its implementation can not be carried out well. This is observable from two Gender Inequality Index (GII) indicators, such as Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) and the percentage of women’s representation in national parliaments, which are still alarming.

Through this policy paper, legislators, legislative candidates, and the public are invited to learn more about women’s political representation in Indonesia. This policy paper provides background on gender responsive policies in Indonesia, the issues of gender inequality faced by women in Indonesia, the political representation of women and gender equality policy, and policy recommendations. This book identifies gender responsive policies and relation to women’s political representation and its implementation on the lives of women in Indonesia. It is expected that this study may encourage the legalization process of the bill to become the Gender Equality and Equity law.
