Women Research Institute with the support from USAID MADANI started the Women’s Leadership Program at the end of 2021. This program was given to 32 women representatives from MADANI’s lead partner organizations who came from 32 different districts/cities in 6 provinces of Indonesia namely Banten, West Java, Central Java , East Java, South Sulawesi, and West Kalimantan.
The program, which has been running for approximately 15 months, has strengthened the capacity of civil society to advocate for accountability and diversity to the government at the local level. Through training and mentoring, this program examines and discusses material covering five modules: 1) Inclusive Women’s Leadership; 2) Intersection and GESI in Women’s Leadership; 3) Social Analysis with a Gender Perspective; 4) Gender Mainstreaming Advocacy; and 5) Facilitation and Leadership Skills for Gender Mainstreaming.
As an outcome, this program has increased the capacity of local facilitators who are able to promote gender-related considerations in their respective organizations. Through an analysis of the impact of the program where data were obtained quantitatively (pre- and post-test) and qualitatively (interviews and discussions), 90.63 percent of participants (or 29 out of 32 participants) assessed that their knowledge regarding the topics given had increased, with average increase of 2.63 points. This is reinforced by findings regarding the strengthening of their sensitivity in identifying gender gaps in a more systematic manner related to the issues they are working on.
As a follow-up to this program, the participants will bring the knowledge and perspectives they get from this program to positively influence the learning forums that are assisted by their respective organizations. In turn, gender promotion by these local facilitators is expected to strengthen the capacity, legitimacy and sustainability of the organization, before they can promote the same thing through the work they do, both to beneficiaries and other related parties in general.
